Chess Assistant — Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 6, 2026

Overview

Chess Assistant is a chess and checkers study and analysis tool designed to help players learn, improve their skills, and better understand game positions.

Chess analysis is performed locally on the user's device using the open-source Stockfish chess engine.

Checkers analysis, including analysis for the Lukok checkers app, is also performed locally on the user's device.

This Privacy Policy explains what information Chess Assistant accesses, collects, processes, and stores, how that information is used, and the choices available to users.

Purpose

Chess Assistant is intended as an educational and training tool for chess and checkers players who want to:

Users are responsible for using Chess Assistant in accordance with the rules and terms of service of the game platforms they use.

Chess Assistant is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Chess.com, Lichess, or Lukok.

Data Collection

We collect as little information as necessary to operate, protect, and improve Chess Assistant.

The information that may leave your device is limited to:

This information uses a pseudonymous device identifier as described below.

Chess Assistant does not require account registration.

Your chosen username is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

Chess analysis using Stockfish and checkers analysis are performed locally on your device.

Chess and checkers positions, moves, and game information are not normally transmitted to our servers. Limited game information may be transmitted only through the Board-Reading Reports described below.

We do not collect advertising data and do not use your information to track you across other apps or websites.

Free-Tier Usage Counter

The free version of Chess Assistant keeps a count of the analyses it performs.

This count is used to manage free features and free trials of Premium features and to prevent abuse.

For these purposes, the free version sends the following information to a server operated by the developer through an encrypted HTTPS connection:

The Android identifier is hashed before being sent. The server does not receive the original identifier.

The hash is not associated by Chess Assistant with your name, email address, Google account, or usernames used in supported chess or checkers apps.

Google Play Integrity

The free version uses the Google Play Integrity API to verify that the app is genuine, was installed through an authorized Google Play environment, and is running in an environment that satisfies applicable integrity checks.

Google performs the integrity check under Google's own privacy practices.

Our server receives the integrity result and may store whether the verification succeeded. If verification fails, the server may also store a short technical reason code.

If you are using a free trial of Premium features, the server also stores the date on which the trial ends. A trial may be ended early when required integrity checks fail.

Retention

Free-tier counter records are automatically deleted 30 days after the app last reports activity.

After that period, the server may retain only the one-way device hash together with:

This limited record is used to prevent reinstalling the app from repeatedly starting new free trials.

It is automatically deleted 400 days after the app last reports activity.

For abuse prevention, the server may temporarily process your IP address in memory for up to one hour.

The IP address is not stored together with usage-counter records, usage statistics, or Board-Reading Reports.

Premium subscribers do not send the free-tier usage-counter information described in this section.

Usage and Diagnostic Statistics

To understand how Chess Assistant is used, improve reliability, identify technical problems, and prevent abuse, free and Premium versions send usage and diagnostic statistics to the developer's server over HTTPS.

These statistics may include:

Country information may be determined from the SIM card, mobile network, or device language or region information.

Chess Assistant does not request GPS or location permission for this purpose.

These usage statistics do not contain:

Board-reading statistics contain counts, states, and technical reason codes rather than the contents of the game screen.

Usage statistics are associated with the same pseudonymous one-way device hash and installation identifier described above.

They are used only to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve Chess Assistant.

They are not sold or used for advertising.

Usage and diagnostic statistics are automatically deleted after 90 days.

Board-Reading Reports

Chess Assistant includes a diagnostic reporting feature designed to help identify and fix problems with automatic chess and checkers board reading.

Board-Reading Reports are sent only after you agree to them in the disclosure Chess Assistant shows before you turn on its Accessibility Service.

If you turned on the Accessibility Service before that disclosure included information about Board-Reading Reports, Chess Assistant will show the disclosure to you again.

If you choose Not now, Board-Reading Reports are not sent.

Board-Reading Reports stop when you disable Chess Assistant's Accessibility Service.

If you want to withdraw your agreement while keeping other app data unchanged, you may contact us using the email address provided in the Contact section below regarding previously submitted reports.

You may also clear Chess Assistant's app data through Android settings and choose Not now when the disclosure is shown again.

A report may be generated when:

Reports are limited to information relevant to diagnosing board-reading problems.

A report may contain:

Before a report is transmitted, unrelated text is excluded on the device.

This includes information such as:

For excluded text, the report may retain only technical information such as the text length when needed for diagnosing interface structure.

Board-Reading Reports are used only to diagnose and improve board-reading functionality.

They are not sold or used for advertising.

Reports are automatically deleted after 14 days.

Chess Assistant sends no more than five automatically generated Board-Reading Reports per day.

Accessibility Service

Chess Assistant uses Android's Accessibility Service only when the user explicitly enables the automatic board-reading feature.

The Accessibility Service allows Chess Assistant to identify and reconstruct chess and checkers positions displayed in supported applications:

To provide this functionality, the Accessibility Service may read accessibility elements related to the game, including:

This information is processed locally on the user's device to provide Chess Assistant's chess and checkers study and analysis features.

Stockfish is used locally for chess analysis.

The Accessibility Service is not used to intentionally access or collect:

Information obtained through the Accessibility Service is not normally transmitted to our servers.

The only exception is the Board-Reading Reports described above, which are sent only after the user agrees to them in the Accessibility disclosure.

When the user has agreed to Board-Reading Reports, limited game and interface information necessary to diagnose board-reading problems may be transmitted as described in the “Board-Reading Reports” section.

When reading a game displayed by Lichess, Chess Assistant may temporarily scroll the visible move list in order to read earlier chess moves and then return the move list to its previous or latest position.

This interaction is performed only as part of automatic board reconstruction.

Users can disable the Accessibility Service at any time through Android settings.

Disabling the service prevents Chess Assistant from automatically reading boards from supported chess and checkers applications.

Features that do not require automatic board reading can continue to be used.

In-App Purchases

Premium features are available through Google Play In-App Purchases.

Payment processing is handled by Google Play.

Chess Assistant and its developer do not receive or store your payment-card or other payment information.

Google Play may provide the app with information necessary to determine purchase and subscription status.

Data Stored on Your Device

Chess Assistant stores certain information locally on your device using Android SharedPreferences or equivalent Android storage mechanisms.

This may include:

Except for information specifically described in the Free-Tier Usage Counter, Usage and Diagnostic Statistics, and Board-Reading Reports sections, this locally stored information is not transmitted to our servers.

Local app information is removed according to Android's app-data and uninstall behavior when the application is uninstalled or its data is cleared.

Data Security

Information transmitted between Chess Assistant and the developer's server is sent using encrypted HTTPS connections.

We limit server-side collection to information necessary to operate, secure, diagnose, and improve the app.

Retention periods are limited according to the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

No method of electronic transmission or storage can guarantee absolute security, but reasonable measures are used to protect information handled by Chess Assistant.

Data Deletion

Users of Chess Stockfish Assistant (shown on the device as Chess Assistant) can ask for the data collected from their device to be deleted.

To request deletion:

  1. Send an email to joarlemafra@gmail.com with the subject “Data deletion request”.
  2. Include your device model and the approximate dates you used the app. Chess Assistant does not link this data to your name or email address, so this helps us find the data that came from your device.
  3. We will delete the data and confirm by email.

When a request is completed, the following data from your device is deleted:

The limited record described in the Retention section (the one-way device hash, the date it was first seen, and the date a free trial ended) may be kept for up to 400 days after the app last reports activity, to prevent repeated free trials.

Without a request, data is deleted automatically after the periods described in this Privacy Policy.

Third-Party Services

Chess Assistant uses the following Google services:

Google Play Billing

Used to process Premium purchases and subscriptions.

Payment processing is handled by Google under Google's applicable terms and privacy practices.

Google Play Integrity API

Used by the free version to help verify the integrity and installation environment of the app and to prevent abuse of free usage and trial features.

Integrity processing performed by Google is subject to Google's applicable privacy practices.

The server used for Chess Assistant's free-tier counters, usage statistics, and Board-Reading Reports is operated by the developer and is not considered a separate third-party analytics or advertising service.

Chess Assistant does not use third-party advertising services for the data processing described in this Privacy Policy.

Children's Privacy

Chess Assistant is not directed to children under 13.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

If we become aware that information from a child under 13 has been collected contrary to this policy or applicable requirements, we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

User Choices

Depending on the feature, users can:

Some features cannot function without the permissions or processing necessary to provide them.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to Chess Assistant, its features, legal requirements, or privacy practices.

When this Privacy Policy is updated, the “Last updated” date at the top of this document will also be updated.
